The dimeric hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indole alkaloids (1a-d; and cyclotryptamine alkaloids) remain one of the most fascinating targets which continue to attract tremendous synthetic interest.1a In these alkaloids, two hexahydropyrrolo[2,3-b]indole scaffolds are linked with a labile C3a–C3a’ -bond (Figure 1), thereby creating vicinal all-carbon quaternary stereogenic centers that poses utmost synthetic challenge.1b These are found in a number of different types of plants and animals and are associated with a wide array of biological activities.1c Therefore, because on their important bioactivities in addition to intriguing architecture (four contiguous stereogenic centers, see 1a-d) there are huge synthetic interests from the synthetic community.1d
