This study explores a milder approach for the fabrication of magnetic ferrite nanoparticles (NPs) for use as catalysts in the selected organic reactions. A co-precipitation method coupled with hydrothermal aging has been adopted to synthesize Co and Ni ferrite NPs in the absence of any additive. Different modern instrumental techniques such as electron microscopy, diffractometry, magnetometry and spectroscopy have been used to characterize the synthesized NPs. The results showed that both the synthesized NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs are spherical, pure, and highly crystalline with average sizes below 12 nm. The catalytic activity of the synthesized NiFe2O4 and CoFe2O4 NPs has been assessed in the selective oxidation of benzyl alcohol and C-S coupling reaction under ambient reaction conditions. Both the catalysts exhibited superior catalytic activity towards oxidation and C-S coupling reactions. The catalysts are magnetically separable and are reusable up to five cycles without loss of catalytic activity.
