Supercapacitors (SCs) are sustainable alternative technology which provide an edge over conventional capacitors and batteries owing to their pulse power capability, long cycle life, and minimal environmental impact.1 Crucial characteristics required for an electrode material for SCs applications can be compiled as : (a) an electrically conductive network for intraparticle ion percolation, (b) a highly accessible surface area with uniform narrow ultramicropores /micropores for elevation in ion accumulation, (c) interconnected networks for improving interparticle ion diffusion, and (d) wettability to enhance the accessibility of active sites. Carbon nanomaterials possess these characteristics individually such as graphene or CNTs have high electrical conductivity, activated carbon carry high surface area and carbon-based aerogels own high porosity.2 Nevertheless, all four characteristics are rare to be found in a single carbon material. Therefore, to bring a balance of graphitization and porosity with high electrical conductivity to percolate ions and store them in a single material is challenging. In this work, we had synthesized an electrically conducting biordered ultramicroporous graphitic carbon (BUGC) employing an activation methodology, wherein reduced graphene (RG) was infused with nonporous carbon (NC) along with porogen KOH to catalyze bulk graphitization. The nanoengineered material endured superior properties such as a high electrical conductivity due to a biordered graphitic arrangement, large BET surface area with ultramicropores/ micropores, a short-range graphitic interconnected network for ion diffusion, and oxygen functionalities for better wettability in the aqueous electrolyte (scheme 1). Consequently, High specific capacitances in three-electrode assembly and two-electrode assembly have been obtained for BUGC with an excellent cyclic stability of 94% after 10,000 cycles as shown in scheme1. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) had been extensively employed to estimate an upper limit of specific capacitance.3,4 The upper limit capacitance obtained from EIS and the specific capacitance obtained from a galvanostatic charge/discharge experiment have been utilized to define a parameter, i.e., supercapacitor performance efficiency (SPE). SPE was found to be 2.7 times higher for BUGC than that of even electrically conductive RG, which further validated the importance of the unique structural features in BUGC.2
