Owing to their unique quantized optical properties and low toxicity, luminescent noble metal nanoclusters (NCs) have been a topic of global contemporary research.1,2 Besides exhibiting high photoluminescence (PL) and tuneable emission, these bio-compatible, stable and small sized NCs (usually <3 nm and comprised of a few to several hundreds of atoms) display a wide range of applications in the interdisciplinary field of research.3,4
The role of the small molecules towards the preparation of metal nanomaterials generates a point of interest in our research work.5,6 In this study, we have prepared silver nanomaterials (AgNMs) using the ligand precursor, small amino acid, L-Tyrosine (Tyr) and we have demonstrated that this AgNM system was comprising of a dual system; the smaller Silver Nanoclusters (responsible exclusively for the luminescence properties) and larger Silver Nanoparticles (responsible exclusively for the anti-microbial properties).6 The luminescent properties of this AgNMs system substantiate the role played by Tyr as a capping as well as a reducing agent outside the protein environment. The interesting feature of this report is the promising anti-microbial properties of the AgNMs, against Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida albicans, Escherichia coli, and Bacillus cereus cell lines.6 Additionally, the combating ability of our AgNM system against pathogenic strains (Candida albicans and Bacillus cereus) as well makes this work more versatile. Also, we have thoroughly investigated the mechanistic aspects of the anti-microbial activity of the AgNMs using in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains as a model. We monitored this anti-microbial activity by performing Propidium Iodide (PI) staining, examining the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, leakage of proteins, DNA cleavage, etc. and concluded that the AgNM-mediated cytotoxicity is the result of the elevated oxidative stress inside the cell lines through the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2) species.6 As a consequence, disrupting the cell membrane was also happening followed by leakage of inter-cellular proteins from the cells. This study can pave the way towards the role of a small molecule, Tyr towards the formation of NMs and display new NMs for potential antimicrobial applications.6
