Porphyrins with their high molar extinction coefficients and tunable electrochemical properties have shown a promising application in dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs)1. Though many D-π-A based porphyrin dyes have been reported achieving an efficiency upto 13%,2 they lack significant absorption in the NIR region which contains significant flux of photons from sunlight. To capitalize from the NIR region, we have employed a highly NIR active naphthobipyrrole based BODIPY dye, developed by our group,3 as an acceptor. The BODIPY unit conjugated with diarylamine donor substituted porphyrin moieties displayed panchromatic absorption beyond 800 nm with a significant increase in the intensity and red shift of the Q-bands when compared to the previously reported porphyrins.2 The computational calculations revealed a significant electron density of LUMO completely on the anchoring BODIPY group, which might be helpful in increasing the electron injection efficiency. The porphyrin-BODIPY conjugates will be further assessed in calculating their efficiencies in DSCs
