Subchlorin, a ring-contracted congener of chlorin, in which one of the pyrrolic double bond (β-β) is reduced, was first reported by Osuka group by reduction of the corresponding subporphyrin analogues.1 Subchlorin can be characterized as a conjugated 14 π-electronic, bowl-shaped macrocycle. It displays distinct optical properties with split Soret band, red-shifted intense lowest energy band, enhanced fluorescence and some of them generate singlet oxygen efficiently. Recently, our group has also reported exclusively and direct synthesis of novel subchlorin with meso esters without its oxidized counterpart i.e, subporphyrin2 and we have also explored various peripherally modified subchlorinic systems with different meso-substituents to apprehend the effect of those groups on the photophysical properties of the macrocycle.3(a-c)
