Nerve agents are highly lethal organophosphorus derivatives which block the functioning of acetyl cholinesterase enzyme (AChE)iresponsible for the hydrolysis of acetylcholine neurotransmitter resulting in the neuromuscular paralysis and death of the victims. Increasing global concern about the use of nerve agents by non state actors accelerated the development of selective & sensitive on-site detection system for them. In recent years, development of optical chemical detection methods (chromogenic and fluorogenic)iifor nerve agents and their mimics like DCNP has gained importance due to their simplicity, portability and ability of naked eye detection without requiring sophisticated instruments. However, reported optical detection methods suffer from poor selectivity due to the involvement of single non-specific nucleophilic-electrophilic interaction between sensor and analyte to give rise to false positive alarms. To overcome this limitation, we, herein, describe a method involving a multi-functional chemical sensor which is capable of detecting the nerve agent Tabun simulant diethylcyanophosphate (DCNP) by virtue of its multiple interactions with the reactive sub units of DCNP. These multiple interactions modulate the optical properties of the chemical sensor in dual channels which were found to be specific for DCNP. Other common interferences including phosphorus derivatives, acid and anions underwent only single interaction with the sensor and hence could not produce the response similar to that obtained with DCNP. The method was also found to be quite sensitive and able to detect the DCNP in the micromolar range (LOD = 0.20 uM).
