Chemiresistive gas sensing is primarily a surface phenomenon.1 But for thick film gas sensors, the surface is followed by material bulk which can be anticipated to have significant influence on surface properties. Owing to huge popularity of thick film gas sensors in detecting a wide array of gas and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs),2 an understanding of electronic behavior in surface and bulk is of huge importance. In this work,3 we have synthesized Al doped tin oxide nanoparticles by a co-precipitation method followed by ultrasonication and coated them into Taguchi sensors for detecting 5 ppm ethanol vapor. While the Al doped samples showed multifold improved ethanol sensing than pure tin oxide, the sample Sn0.869Al0.242O1.888 showed an excellent 98.2% response which was 2.4 times more than Sn0.947Al0.144O1.881. The above changes could be explained using concepts of shrinkage in unit cell volume by virtue of Al doping, surface electron immobilization and bulk electron mobilization effects within the thick film. Above understanding might be useful in fabricating high efficiency gas sensors with excellent selectivity.
