"Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) Centre is an autonomous Inter University Centre established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) of India. It is initiated in 1991 as a project of IUCAA (Waghmode, 2014). INFLIBNET has developed a National ETD Shodhganga which is serving as ETD for researchers as a useful tool. (Kumar, 2015).
Electronic thesis and dissertation database is popularly known as ETD. Earlier, researchers were not easily able to access research work done and submitted to universities and research institutes. But due to revolution in information technology, ETD is accessible from the stockholders like universities as well as national and international organizations. (Saka, Yusufu &; Mommoh, 2020)
After IT explosion, open market policy and word wide web, India become hub for information processing and software development so it is expected that India could become a major centre for natural language processing for all over the world and in similar passion, research growth might be boosted in these languages in Indian universities. Before colonial era, European languages were not known in India as it is now. As Portuguese, followed by Dutch, French and English people landed here and ruled; these European languages became well-known. After 1857, British people started ruling over Indian subcontinent, English became major administrative language in this region.
Beside English, French and Portuguese colony ruled over small geographical portion in nation till independence.As first higher education institute was set-up by British East India Company was the Calcutta Madrasa in 1781 (Glavin, C., 2019), the language used to impart was naturally English. The British in 1857 introduced the system of European higher education in India by establishing of Universities at Bombay, Calcutta and Madras. English also become the medium of instruction at the higher education. (Hossain &amp; Mondal, 2019)
In similar way Portuguese became official language for administration and in higher education in Portuguese colonies (i.e. Goa). (Braganza, A. (1983). In spite of independence, English remain a major language till this date, in Indian Universities across the nation. So, researcher has excluded this language from the list of “Modern European Languages”.
As bibliometric study provides data of research done and material used for conducting and analysing the bibliographic data. As bibliometric analysis provides language wise distribution of material available, it is handy to establish link between NLP emerging market and what happened in Indian Universities. (Neelamma, 2016) (Sofik,, Rahman &amp; Sabahat, 2021) Here in this work researchers have tried to find with retrospective data of research done in Modern European Languages with keeping in mind that the Natural Language Processing market is increasing in India and side by side what is the scenario in Indian Universities? It is important now-a-days that the “common” languages should have made available for processing and it is close to linguistics of particular language. It has link to information processing. It is used in AI for various purposes, also a part of IOT as well in day to day life; and the best example is chat-boat of CRM and Alexa of Google (Aiyesha Sadiya et al., 2018)
Researcher accessed online data from ETD-Shodhganga and tried to find out correlation between them. After collection of data, researcher analysed it in simple manner to justify need of emerging market of NLP across the globe with different aspects of statistics. Of course the available data is not enough for time series analysis, however researcher tried to justify the hypothesis.
The available data, which is accessed from ETD-Shodhganga shows that, other than English, rest of European languages are less exploited in the field of research in India. Very few universities have established foreign language departments across the nations and what research have been done, mostly on critical study. Hence major work done is available in English. However, in post-colonial era i.e. independent India, French is the most exploited language amidst all non-English modern European Languages.
If India wants to tap future market of Natural Language Processing, research must be boosted in other languages other than English and to boost the research, MHRD, UGC and Indian Universities must be equipped with more foreign language departments and if possible more institutes needed across the nation like CIEFL.
