<p>The mechanical properties of LENS Co-Cr-Mo builds with high power and variable powder feed rate were studied to determine the microstructure evolution and sub-macro mechanical properties of bulk structures. Co-Cr-Mo is a commonly applied alloy in total hip and knee replacements, dental, and support structures due to its biocompatibility, great hardness and abrasion resistance. These tribological properties make Co-Cr-Mo a preferred alloy for applications with metal-on-metal (MOM) contact when compared to Ti alloys. In order to affirm its efficacy as a viable manufacturing avenue for this alloy, directed energy deposition (DED) must be confirmed to have comparable material properties. To validate these properties, a study was undertaken to understand the pertinent set of process parameters to create structurally viable bulk structures. Co-Cr-Mo cubes were successfully printed via laser engineered net shaping (LENS). SEM-EDS revealed the presence of networked and jagged carbides with varying amounts of Mo determining the structure of the feature. XRD further confirmed the presence of the γ and ε phases of Co-Cr-Mo. Microindentation results showed a material with hardness values similar to values presented in literature for traditional methods such as casting. Micro and nanomechanical tests provided characteristic behavior of individual phases within segmented regions that were unique to the LENS process. These properties were close to those of cast and other traditional manufacturing methods. Taken in aggregate, this study provides a look into the opportunities made possible through LENS development of Co-Cr-Mo alloys.</p>

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
