<p class="MsoBodyTextIndent"><i>Ultrasonic spot welding is one of feasible joining process for polymer composite materials and has been adapted in aerospace and automotive industries for its advantages such as cost effective and short cycle time. Consideration of dynamic response in ultrasonic spot welding is important to understand the heating mechanism and joint performance of ultrasonic spot welding without energy directors because interfacial frictional heating is a dominant heating mechanism that is influenced by the elastic behavior of materials. This paper presents a dynamic numerical model to investigate the natural frequencies of a multi-spot ultrasonic spot welding system for different joint locations and their interaction on realization of a high quality joint. The quality of a joint is estimated based on calculation of the heat generation and weld area which are predicted by a physical-based finite element model of the ultrasonic welding process for a single spot. Based on these calculations, it is extracted a relationship between the dynamic response and joining performance at variation of the location of the joining spot. The results show that a system at the natural frequency gives a lower joining performance comparing. The cause of this response is justified by the dissipation of the vibration energy through resonance to the system instead of being focused on the welding spot. These findings can provide guidelines in designing multisport welding systems by selection of an optimized distance between joints and their position relative to the edges of the system.</i></p>

This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
