<p>The DED process enables rapid deposition of protective coatings on complex free-form&nbsp;parts which are not possible using any other manufacturing method. Such coatings can&nbsp;double the life of parts operating in harsh environments.&nbsp; Despite its far-reaching&nbsp;possibilities, defects such as porosity and cracking currently afflict DED-processed&nbsp;coatings.&nbsp;&nbsp;The goal of this work is to deposit crack-free Stellite 21 coatings using Directed Energy Deposition (DED) additive manufacturing process. The objectives are : (1) quantify the effect of process settings on cracking and microstructure of DED-deposited Stellite coatings, and (2) link the microstructure evolved to temperature gradients generated during the deposition process. The main result is that cracking occurs due to the segregation of chromium in the inter-dendritic regions, and the cracking is alleviated by preheating the substrate and depositing the coating at a moderate energy density.</p>

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
