<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%">This survey reports on motive power developments for the previous year ending in August 2020. Invitations to collaborate were sent to several locomotive builders and railroads. This survey looks at how the needs of the railroads are changing in terms of motive power both due to Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR) and also due to the novel Coronavirus pandemic. The survey also looks at the scope of new and rebuilt motive power during the past year. During this time, several Class 1 railroads have heavily adopted the rebuilding and modernization of existing motive power. Finally, this survey will conclude with a look back at the high horsepower race following the retirement of the EMD SD80MAC locomotives from Class 1 ownership.</p><p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%">This abstract is submitted as part of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) Rail Transportation Division (RTD) Progress Reports Committee yearly report. The resulting survey is intended to provide an industry update for the progress and development of mechanical engineering in the space of locomotives and motive power. This may include new purchases and / or rebuild programs conducted by the railroads themselves and also new locomotive products, manufacturer overhaul / rebuild programs, locomotive technology developments from locomotive equipment manufacturers.</p>

2021 Joint Rail Conference (JRC2021)

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
