<p>Electromechanical brake (EMB) is a novel braking mode for railway trains. The reliability of the brake system is important for railway system safety. The key issues of prognostics and health management (PHM) for EMB systems are discussed at first. Then the critical failure modes of the EMB system and their failure mechanisms are analyzed. Hence, the dominant tasks of the PHM system are confirmed, containing the battery State-of-Charge (SOC) estimation, the condition monitoring of electrical components, and the crack prediction of mechanical components. Based on the failure mechanisms, the health indicators are constructed for fault detection and prediction. The health stages and their transition points are proposed considering both the normal operating capacity and the RAMS requirements for railway applications. The physical model is established for the battery SOC estimation. The model-based and data-driven hybrid method is used to detect the crack growth of mechanical components and the degradation in electrical properties. Consequently, the PHM working flow is introduced in this paper. The vehicle operation parameters, the braking system control commands, and the sensor signals are inputs of the PHM system. These inputs are processed and gathered as health indicators. Then the PHM system adopts the physical model or the hybrid algorithms to track the failure mode and component. For the developing fault, the system locates the health stage and estimates the remaining useful lifetime (RUL) of the EMB system. The PHM system is useful for condition-based maintenance. And it is meaningful for the reliability and safety improvement of the EMB systems.</p>

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
