<p dir="ltr">&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Due to the high-power efficiency of lithium-ion batteries, there has been an increased interest in integrating the batteries into vehicles to create a more sustainable fuel system.&nbsp; However, due to the high rate of discharge required to allow the vehicle to function, there is an influx of heat generation.&nbsp; Lithium ion batteries ideally function in a temperature range of 25 - 40 ℃, and when exposed to extremely high or low temperatures the battery efficiency might significantly decrease, and effects such as thermal runaway may take place.&nbsp; To combat this, a high amount of research has been conducted to explore options to create systems utilizing fluids to regulate the temperature of the battery pack.&nbsp; Developments in cooling systems have commonly used air from the environment as the cooling fluid, but research in recent years is innovating towards liquids that encourage a higher rate of heat dissipation.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Herein this paper we introduce the challenges, current technologies, and opportunities within battery thermal management systems. We highlight the specific applications and advancements within the electric vehicle industry, centering on new materials, engineered liquids, system designs, and additive manufacturing.&nbsp; A key component of battery thermal management is the manufacturing processes and materials used.&nbsp; Studies have been done on the use of phase change materials or nanomaterials can advance the cooling rates. In addition, the rate of heat dissipation is strongly dependent on the fluid used to cool the system, and thus a key area of research is focusing on creating new fluids with desirable properties which have high potential to both cool the battery while also being able to safely interact with the battery. The recent advances in additive manufacturing enables the demonstration of cooling system designs integrating complicated cooling channels in a three-dimensional design to encourage a higher rate of heat transfer. After we introduce new core technologies in battery thermal management, we list several up-to-date industrial examples that use liquid-based cooling. Therefore, this paper will summarize the holistic view to show the promising direction of the field and possible techniques of applying the fluid for the battery thermal management.</p>

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
