<p>The trade-off between efficient cooling and low power consumption is a goal that has been always very desirable in electronics cooling, especially nowadays that power densities of processing units are increasing. Conventional cooling solutions do not have the necessary cooling capacities for these power densities, or they require a significant power consumption. In this study, a novel air-cooled thermosyphon cooling system for desktop computers is presented and experimentally tested. The thermosyphon is composed of a vertical micro-channel cold plate as the evaporator and a horizontal air-cooled multiport coil as the condenser, with a height between them of 12 cm. Two fans are applied to the condenser, and the thermal performance is tested with 1700 and 700 RPM as the fan speed. Natural convection results, in the absence of fans, are presented as well. The working fluids selected for the thermosyphon loop are R1234ze(E) and R1233zd(E), both being nearly zero-GWP (Global Warming Potential) refrigerants. The test results presented in this study aim to analyze both the thermal performance (thermal resistance) and hydraulic performance (mass flow rate) as a function of different operating conditions. R1234ze(E) resulted to be the best performing working fluid, able to reject up to 300 W, corresponding to a heat flux of 20.2 W/cm<sup>2</sup> and resulting in a performance index (heat load divided by fan energy consumption) of 139.</p>

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
