Purdue University, 585 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN 47907 USAAbstract: Dryout in a heat pipe occurs when the operating heat load is above the capillary limit under transient or steady-state conditions. Following the occurrence of capillary dryout, the thermal resistance and evaporator temperature increase dramatically, and recovering the original thermal performance requires reducing the heat load to a level much lower than the steady state capillary limit. Our previous work has demonstrated and characterized this temperature hysteresis at the evaporator of a heat pipe after dryout. In this study, it is experimentally shown that if dryout is induced by pulsing the heat pipe to a sufficiently high power, there exists a maximum thermal resistance (and thereby a maximum temperature hysteresis) at steady-state after the dryout. Moreover, during recovery from the dryout, reducing the power input does not necessarily reduce the thermal resistance over some range of powers below the capillary limit. Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
