<p style="text-align: justify">Heat exchangers are useful equipment that are being used for efficient heat transfer from one fluid to another since ages. Though shell and helically coiled heat exchangers has been around for years but they are not quite well known compared to shell and straight tube heat exchangers. Helically coiled heat exchangers are used in different applications because of its higher heat transfer capability and compactness. It is used in various industries, heat recovery system, nuclear reactors and refrigeration and air conditioning system. Shell and Helically coiled heat exchangers enhance the heat transfer rate due by increasing surface area and secondary fluid flow developed by the curved tube compared to straight tube. In this paper, the heat transfer and effectiveness of a shell and helically coiled heat exchanger using various fluids have been analyzed experimentally and by simulation. An experimental set-up has been fabricated for evaluation of thermal properties of a shell and helically coiled heat exchanger. This work analyses the parameters related to heat transfer from the hot fluid of shell to the cold fluid flowing inside the helical tube. This work assesses the influence of hot fluid flow rate and various fluids inside the helical tube on the heat transfer rate, overall heat transfer coefficient, pressure drop and effectiveness. Two different fluids have been used inside the helical tube, water and ethylene glycol. The overall heat transfer coefficient has been analyzed under steady state and turbulent flow conditions. Counter flow arrangement was used for enhanced heat transfer. The increase in mass flow rate greatly influences the heat transfer rate. The pressure drop analysis was done based on increasing mass flow rate. A mixture of ethylene glycol and water with weight concentration of 50/50% volume ratio has been used as the cold fluid inside the tube which was found to provide better result than water at certain temperature and pressure. Anti-corrosive and Anti-freezing properties of ethylene glycol make it mostly suitable for heat exchanger design. An optimum point of mass flow rate for the maximum effectiveness has been determined. Other factors related to heat exchanger like LMTD and friction factor were analyzed under variable flow rates. The experimental and simulation results of a helically coiled heat exchanger were compared with that of shell and straight tube heat exchanger. An enhancement of heat transfer was observed for helical coil system. The simulation data is in close agreement with the experimental data.</p>
