During each operating cycle of an aircraft engine, the blades of the gas turbine are subjected to elevated temperature along with high levels of stress, especially in the high-pressure region. Another factor that overlaps this condition of quasi-steady state is the induced stresses due to vibrational load by the local perturbations. The main objective of this study is to discuss the conventional materials used for the manufacturing of HPT-Disk along with alternative materials and their manufacturing processes.&nbsp;Based on the loads endured by the blades during the operation of the engine a selection, criterion for the materials is characterized. These parameters are then used to identify the potential materials for manufacturing the high-pressure turbine disk using Granta Edupack software. Majority of the critical components in an aeroderivative engines are often manufactured using Ni- based superalloys owing to their retention ability of mechanical properties at high temperature. A286 and IN-718 alloys are the most common materials used in aero-derivative turbines, while IN-706, Cr-Mo-V alloy, and alloys from the 12 Cr family including M-152 are used in IGTs. Using the Edupack software these materials are investigated for their properties under various load condition that the blades endure during the operation and are validated for their selection as conventional materials.Key to sustainable aviation is to find an efficient way to optimize the design of an aircraft and its parts irrespective of its size. Innovation of new materials with exceptional mechanical properties with reduced overall weight can contribute substantially towards a greener environment. Alternative materials proposed in this paper includes the likes of TMW alloys, RR1000, alloy 718Plus, MARM247LC, LSHR and ME3 (René 104). The chemical composition for these materials is discussed with a comparison of its materials properties with the existing conventional materials. Superior mechanical properties of these materials are analyzed based on their chemical composition, phase transformation and &nbsp;precipitates. The characteristics of the materials are evaluated with the experimental result of the superalloys with a reference material. Due to the excellent thermal property, low density and high strength, ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) and intermetallic matrix composites (IMCs) are used as alternative material in the manufacturing of bladed disk or more commonly known as BLISK. The damping properties of these materials make them a strong candidate for their use in this region of the turbine. The results obtained using chemical vapor infiltration methods are reviewed and justified.The manufacturing routes play an important role in the structure of the material. The paper discusses common manufacturing routes for both conventional and alternate materials along with its effect on the properties of the material based on cast and wrought or ingot metallurgy, powder metallurgy, mechanical and electrochemical method. The process of manufacturing of these superalloys and how they affect the chemical compositions of these materials are also discussed.Finally, the paper focuses on the surface treatments based on the operating conditions of HPT disk and the threat it pose to the surface condition like oxidation due to the high temperature and hot corrosion. Even though the new materials have restricted the extent of damage due to these surface conditions there remain a problem which include increasing creep strength, and these can be mitigated with the help of specially engineered coatings. Experimental results that characterize oxidation and hot corrosion are reviewed in this study.
