In the present study, we investigate the mesh dependence in the finite element analysis of crease initiation and propagation (Hoshi et al., 2021). To this end, 2D finite element analysis is performed using the incompressible Neo–Hookean solid model. As an initial geometric defect, the V-shaped notch is introduced in the finite element model, resulting in considering the notch depth as a parameter. As the magnitude of the applied strain increases, the strain concentration occurs at the bottom of the notch. The crease initiation occurs from this point, which is defined as the first crease to distinguish sequential creases. The evolution of the first crease causes the initiation of the second crease and further creases, i.e., the crease propagation is analyzed. Although the first crease is initiated by the V-shaped notch, the sequential creases are triggered by the deformation generated by the evolution of creases. Results show that the distance of the creases is not random but has a characteristic dimension. This dimension depends on the notch depth and finite element resolution. When the notch depth is sufficiently small, the first crease occurs at the Biot strain (Biot, 1963, 1965), (Cao and Hutchinson, 2012). The first crease appears as a result of the occurrence and evolution of wrinkling. In this case, the initiation of sequential creases occurs simultaneously at the strain. In contrast, when the notch depth is relatively large, the first crease occurs without the onset of wrinkling. Because the first crease appears at a low value of the applied strain, the propagation of creasing needs the additional increases of the applied strain. These different tendencies affect the characteristic dimension of the crease distance. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
