<p>Single-Edge-Notch Tension (SENT) specimens have been used for the fracture toughness determination of base, weld, and heat-affected-zone (HAZ) materials.&nbsp; While the traditional methods of evaluation allow for a direct interpretation and application of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics approaches such as those that have evolved over the last five&nbsp;decades, for SENT specimens with a flaw/crack in weld and base materials, the presence of cracking in HAZ complicates such routine approaches.&nbsp; This work summarizes the efforts from a recent experiment that was conducted and&nbsp;&nbsp;investigated to develop SENT recommended practices and worldwide standards.&nbsp; While the experiments indicate the presence of mode-mixity in these weld fracture experiments, their characterization and accounting for them in the recommended practice are still in their early developmental stages.&nbsp; Past work on the nuclear piping integrity and other oil and gas applications have shown the occurrence of such behavior, where the materials are tested in base, weld, and&nbsp;HAZ material regions to bound the strength and fracture toughness evaluations, a better procedural analysis and treatement of the elastic-plastic crack growth is needed and benefits the industry.&nbsp; Towards such an end, this work discusses&nbsp;the experimental, analytical, and numerical approaches to form initial guidelines and a framework for future discussions.</p>

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
