Electricity suppliers introduced the time-of-use (TOU) to residential buildings in recent years. By increasing the electric price during the on-peak hours (e.g., 2 pm to 7 pm in summer months), electricity suppliers except to regulate the energy usage from homeowners when the grid is near their capacity. Therefore, homeowners are motivated to shift load by moving the home electricity use from on-peak hours to off-peak hours for utility cost savings. However, peak load management is another factor that needs to be considered since the higher peak load might cause other penalties, such as making the supplier change their current tariff policy in the next paying period since the grid needs to fulfill a higher demand. &nbsp;In this paper we explore the Home Energy Management System (HEMS) Strategy for the homeowners considering saving money by reducing/avoiding the on-peak hour electricity usage while reducing peak load. A multi-goal scheduling problem is solved by constructing a coupled compromise decision support problem where a water heater is coupled with those flexible, non-thermal appliances like a washing machine. To address the multiple goals, we use the Decision Support Problem (DSP) techniques. A use case simulation shows that our scheduler can make a reasonable tradeoff between two conflicting goals, helping the homeowner save money while maintaining low peak demand.&nbsp;

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
