<p><i>Harmonic scattering due to nonlinear contact interfaces separated by linear material is captured effectively in this study. A long spring-mass chain is used to model wave propagation in the one-dimensional rod having two nonlinear contact interfaces separated by a linear material. Nonlinear contact interfaces are modeled as a symmetric hysteretic material model (Bouc-Wen), and asymmetric hysteretic material model (Generalized Bouc-Wen). Interaction of elastic wave with contacts modeled as symmetric hysteresis results into harmonic scattering with only odd harmonics observed in both backscattered and forward scattered waves. Both odd and even harmonics are noted in the backscattered and forward scattered waves from contact interfaces modeled as asymmetric hysteretic models. In both cases, amplitudes of higher harmonics show decreasing nature with an increase in the harmonics. This is not the case when one of the contact interfaces is modeled as symmetric hysteretic and the other as an asymmetric hysteretic material model. The shape of the hysteretic curves gets amplify at the second interface as the wave travels from first to the second interface both in symmetric hysteresis-linear-symmetric hysteresis (SH-L-SH) and asymmetric hysteresis-linear-asymmetric hysteresis (ASH-L-ASH) cases. In SH-L-ASH and ASH-L-SH cases both symmetric curves are observed at symmetric hysteresis interface and asymmetric hysteretic curves at asymmetric interface. </i></p>
