<p>Here we developed an improved co-extrusion-based FDM 3D printing process to manufacture continuous fiber-reinforced composite sandwich structures (CFRCSSs), during which the panels and corrugated core were integrally tailored without additional bonding work. The bending performance and failure behavior of 3D printed CFRCSSs with various geometric configurations were analytically and experimentally investigated. The analytical predictions of bending stiffness and initial failure load of CFRCSSs were obtained and compared with those measured in three-point bending tests. The results demonstrated that the geometric parameters such as the number of core layers, the corrugation angle and the single-layer core height had a visible impact on the bending properties and failure mechanisms of 3D printed CFRCSSs. Considering four dominant failure modes including face yielding, face buckling, core shear failure and indentation collapse, the failure maps based on the analysis models were constructed to highlight the failure mechanism of CFRCTCSs and provide a practical guide for the design of lightweight sandwich structures. Shape recovery tests were performed to confirm the shape memory effects of the 3D printed composite sandwich structures. Finally, the comparison of the bending properties with several competing structures indicates that 3D printed CFRCSSs possesses the potential to provide new opportunities for lightweight systems and multifunctional applications.</p>

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
