Biocompatible materials (PEEK, ULTEM) have low flammability and can be sterilized, so they can be used in various applications including orthopedics and dentistry, and are known as very suitable materials for medical fields. However, since its melting temperature is about 350 degrees or more, the hotend (nozzle and heat block, etc.) must be kept at a very high temperature for the FDM type 3D printer. In addition, a very strict thermal management technology is required, such as maintaining the molding chamber temperature above the glass transition temperature of the material to prevent rapid shrinkage and twisting due to temperature change.Thus, we are performing numerical investigations for thermal management of printing chamber to ensure temperature uniformity.Since there is a spot-wise heat source inside the chamber, the thermal imbalance is very serious. Thus it is essential to accurately predict the temperature and heat dissipation amount of this heat source.Firstly, comparison of the temperature distribution of the extruder was performed between physical test and numerical simulation. Temperature of heat block was set as 350 degree and the room temperature was 20 degrees. Figure 1 shows the test equipment and comparison of temperature. It was shown that the average error was less than 5% which is an acceptable result. Later, by optimizing the location of the ventilation duct, we will secure the temperature uniformity of the chamber within 5%.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
