<p>The plasma actuator is an active flow control device utilizing the atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge. It consists of two electrodes separated by a dielectric layer. One electrode is exposed to the atmosphere and the other is covered, and when the AC high voltage is applied to the electrodes, a wall-surface jet is generated. The plasma actuator has many advantages such as thin and light, no mechanical parts so it is expected to be applied to a number of fluidic machines, and enhancement of convection cooling. However, there is a significant problem when we apply the plasma actuator in the field of cooling. It is that the actuator itself is a heat generation source due to the discharge. Although some research efforts have been devoted to understanding the heating characteristics of the plasma actuators, they made discussions only on the surface temperature and quantitative discussions on the amount of heating to the dielectric were not performed. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively obtain the heat transfer coefficient and amount of heating to the dielectric in the plasma actuator. The heat transfer coefficient and temperature of the wall-surface jet are estimated by applying it to a theoretical solution of the one-dimensional heat conduction inside the actuator, and the amount of heating is calculated from Fourier's law. The bottom of the actuator is thermal insulated, and the time change of temperature distribution on the dielectric surface is measured using an IR camera. As a result, the distribution of the estimated heat transfer coefficient is similar to the velocity field, so it is physically consistent. The amount of heating of the actuator surface is 10 ~ 30 percent of power consumption but it is variable in applied voltage, dielectric type, and thickness of the dielectric. However, we find two-dimensional heat conduction in the bottom electrode and its effects on the surface temperature distribution. In the future, we need to analyze considering two-dimensional heat conduction.</p>

This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
