<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in; text-align: justify; text-indent: .25in; line-height: 200%">Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results are presented for synthetic turbulence generation of initial conditions for the canonical test case of a turbulent mixing layer (TML) flow. This numerical study investigates the performance of newly proposed Statistically Targeted Forcing (STF) method, its capability to act as a restoring force to match the target mean velocity and turbulent stress in a temporally developing flow where highly unsteady destabilizing mechanisms and influence of are evident. Several previous investigations exist documenting vortex dynamics of the turbulent mixing layer but limited investigations exist in documented synthetic turbulence generation forcing methods that matches target statistical states for initial conditions in the turbulent mixing layer. The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the newly proposed STF method to capture the vortex dynamics and effectively match target mean velocity and resolved turbulent stress predictions using monotonically integrated LES (MILES) simulation. Results are interrogated and compared to target statistical velocity and turbulent stress distributions obtained from DNS simulations available in the literature. Results show that STF method can successfully reproduce desired statistical distributions in a turbulent mixing layer flow and that subsequent MILES simulation results show accurate predictions show accurate growth and evolution of the mixing layer in terms of mean flow and turbulent statistics.</p>

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
