<p>Wing tip vortices are created at every finite wing. On the one side the wing tip vortices are essential for the creation of lift, but on the other side they also create the induced drag. Winglets are devices that reduce the induced drag without reducing substantially the lift of the wing. In such a way fuel can be saved in particular in long distance flights, since reduction of induced drag is on the range of a few percent. But in long range travel this can save substantial fuel.</p><p>In this work special models of a wing with and without winglet was 3d printed. The models have many internal channels through which flow visualization fog is introduced in the flow at the trailing edge and the winglet of the wing. Using laser sheets the wing tip vortices of the wing without and with winglet are shown revealing its 3d structure in a level of detail which is not shown usually in the literature.</p>

ASME 2021 Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting (FEDSM2021)

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
