<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; line-height: 150%">The selection of an appropriate engine is critical to the performance of any manned and unmanned aircraft. However, un-piloted aero vehicles (UAVs) have tighter design constraints compared to the piloted vehicles. Therefore, the selection of an appropriate engine is critical during the design phase of these vehicles based on the power and mission requirements. Constraints on engine selection often include size, weight, power, required fuel type, specific fuel consumption (s.f.c.), etc. For UAVs flying at low altitudes and low Mach numbers, 2-stroke and 4-stroke reciprocating engines (both spark-ignition and compression-ignition), electric propulsion (Hydrogen Fuel Cells), and small turboprops have proven to be the best options. However, for vehicles flying at higher altitudes and higher Mach numbers, turbofans and turboprops have been the most viable options. At the Department of Aerospace Engineering of University of Kansas, we offer the traditional aerospace propulsion courses such as Jet Propulsion and Rocket propulsion. But we also offer a specific course to cover the propulsion options for UAVs and General Aviation Aircraft. In this course, topics such as Aircraft Reciprocating Engines (2-stroke, 4-stroke, spark-ignition, and compression-ignition), Electric Propulsion, Wankel Engines, Aviation Fuel types and requirements, Propellers (theory, systems, selection, and operation), Engine Systems, Engine Testing, etc are covered. A summary of the course material, laboratories, and lab reports for this course will be presented in this paper. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

ASME 2021 Fluids Engineering Division Summer Meeting (FEDSM2021)

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
