Energy is obtainable in two different forms; renewable energy and non-renewable energy. Non-renewable energy such as fuel, coal, natural gas is the fast depleted energy. In contrast, renewable energy such as hydro, solar, wind, etc., is inexhaustible energy as it is not depleted when used. Increment in demand for energy, growing energy use per capita, rising weather problems, several environmental and harmful consequences of energy issues have prompted engineers and researchers to conduct more and more investigations on the proficiency of renewable energy conversion systems and the technical viability. The wind is one of the promising sustainable sources of energy among all renewable energy due to its sufficiency in the atmosphere in different scales of a low, medium, and high ranges. Wind turbines harness the kinetic energy of wind into electrical energy, and these turbines are one of the most studied technologies of renewable energy. The installation of the vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) in a low wind speed regime is more advantageous than the other lift-types vertical axis wind turbine due to its several advantages. Researchers have shown that the VAWTs are more suitable for performing various small-scale functions like providing electricity and pumping water, particularly in remote places where grid-connected electricity is rare. The H-type Darrieus rotor amongst different VAWT rotors has become more prevalent in the built atmosphere for its straight blade designs and more straightforward construction structures. However, the efficiency and the self-starting capability of the H-type Darrieus rotor is inferior to the other type of wind turbines. Therefore, in this study, a H-type Darrieus VAWT with dimple airfoil blades is investigated to enhance its aerodynamic performance and self-starting ability. The two-dimensional (2D) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has been used to study the effect of various dimple shape airfoils on H-type Darrieus VAWT numerically. These CFD simulations used the unsteady (transient) &nbsp;Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes (URANS) equations to analyze and solve the wind turbine's flow field. In this simulation, the Shear stress transport (SST) &nbsp;turbulence model is used due to its better results. Further, an accurate comparison has been introduced between H-type Darrieus VAWT with dimple airfoil blades and H-type Darrieus VAWT with standard airfoil blades. &nbsp;It has been demonstrated that the proper selection of airfoil blade profiles is vital for performance optimization.&nbsp;Keywords: Renewable energy, Vertical axis wind turbine, H-rotor Darrieus type VAWT, Dimple, performance optimization----------------#Professor; *Research Scholar and Corresponding Author – Email: kabitanaik@iitg.ac.in
