<p>This paper applies Co-flow Jet (CFJ) active flow control airfoil to significantly increase &nbsp;&nbsp;power output efficiency of the NREL phase VI wind turbine. &nbsp;CFJ is a zero-net-mass-flux control method that largely enhances airfoil performance at a low energy expenditure, including lift augmentation, drag reduction and increase of stall angle of attack. &nbsp;CFJ withdraws a small amount of flow near airfoil trailing edge, energizes the flow using a micro-compressor system embedded inside the airfoil, and ejects the flow near airfoil leading edge (LE) tangential to the main flow. &nbsp;The 3D Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations with one-equation Spalart-Allmaras (SA) turbulence model are used to simulate the 3D wind turbine blade. The baseline wind turbine blade is simulated with various freestream velocities for validation. The predicted Cp distributions and power output agrees well with the experiment. For the CFJ wind turbine blade, the injection slot is located at the 4% chord position and the suction slot duct is located at 53% chord position, which are the optimum locations optimized from the 2D trade studies on S809 airfoil. The results of the CFJ wind turbine indicates that a significant improvement of power generation is achieved, especially at the high freestream velocity conditions from 15m/s to 25 m/s that generates a high angle of attack. At the freestream velocity of 15m/s and the CFJ momentum coefficient Cmu of 0.14, the net power generation is increased by 82% compared to the baseline wind turbine due to the substantially suppressed flow separation. As the freestream velocity decreases to 7m/s, the power output improvement is reduced to 12%. The results suggest that the CFJ airfoil's benefit is maximized at high angle of attack (AoA). More detailed results and discussions will be presented in the draft paper to be submitted.</p>

About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
