Steel lazy wave riser (SLWR) is a variation of steel catenary riser (SCR) with additional buoyancy section, which can decouple the response in the lower end of the riser close to touch town point (TDP) from the vessel motion at the riser top end. The concept has been found applicable for deep (&gt; 300 m) and ultra-deep (&gt; 1500 m) water oil and gas exploration.Deepwater steel lazy wave risers (SLWR) subject to vessel motion will be exposed to time-varying oscillatory flow, and there are several structural non-linearities. To investigate the vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) on a riser with non-linear structures under vessel motion and oscillatory flows, time domain approaches are needed.Numerical study has been carried out in the present study, a time-domain approach is used to simulate a full scale steel lazy wave riser. Two cases with simplified riser top motions are simulated numerically. By using default input parameters to the time domain approach, the key VIV response characteristics&nbsp;such as response frequency, curvature and displacements are examined and discussed briefly, improving the understanding of VIV on a SLWR. Gaps are identified as potential future work.&nbsp;More accurate VIV prediction could be achieved by using realistic hydrodynamic inputs into the time domain model.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences.
