The paper addresses the flow-induced response of subsea component. It mainly focuses on the mechanical response resulting from internal intermittent slug flows. The proposed works pursue some experiments already published this year (OMAE2020-18620). The focus will be done on the way to numerically modelled such complex coupled physics for both rigid spool and Steel Lazy Wave Riser.The first part of the paper will address rigid spool design and a coupling approach already published in OTC-29306. The proposed modelling mixes Finite Element solver to predict the mechanical behavior of the system and the Unit Cell Model to recover the intermittent slug flow. It allows accounting for both (i) the variability of the slug flow to be considered at the spool entry and (ii) the variability of the slug and gas pocket flowing along the spool system. The proposed approach will be compared to the experimental (large scale) results already published. This preliminary step will aim at validating the proposed model and at underlining its ability to recover the expected complex physics thanks to the very good comparisons which will be introduced. It will be then compared with the Industry Best Practices for Rigid spool Design to underline the limitations of the latter and highlight the need to consider detailed analysis &amp; modelling to increase both robustness and reliability within design phase.The second part of the paper will extend the proposed coupling philosophy to Steel Lazy Wave Riser configuration. For that application the Unit Cell Model is no more considered for the modelling of the intermittent flow. It is proposed to couple classical flow assurance software (e.g. Olga like to account for more multi-phase flow physics) with any mechanical solver. The one-way coupling will allow accounting for the slugging variability along the riser length and consequently considering the ‘expected’ excitation and resulting impact on the riser response. The coupling will be managed as done for the spool application. The proposed modelling will be compared to the Industry Best Practice to open a discuss on the observed differences.Based on the main outcomes of the proposed analysis some recommendations for design application and mainly for fatigue assessment will be proposed. A discussion will be opened to proposed reliable approach for both rigid spool and riser design.

This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
