<p>Arctic shipping activities have been steadily increased due to global warming and economic benefit. There are more demands to estimate the ship performance in various ice conditions at early design stage. However, ice loads and ship-ice interaction are one of the challenging problems for optimal icebreaker/ice-going vessel design, so it has mainly relied on physical ice model tests. In this paper, a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics)-DEM (Discrete Element Method) coupled approach was applied to estimate the ice resistance and broken ice behavior around the hull including hydrodynamic interactions. This paper deals with the pre-sawn ice condition, which is an ice field filled with high concentration (close to 100%) of ice particles of the same shape and thickness. The benefit to use the pre-sawn ice condition is to maximize the effectiveness of CFD-DEM method since complex ice breaking process can be ignored and initial ice condition can be consistent. This method can be complimentary to the physical model tests for the broken ice conditions, so can evaluate the hull form in various important aspects including ship performance in brash or pack ice, channel clearing capability, severity of propeller ice interaction, astern maneuverability/ice jamming in the channel etc. For the simulation, the moving ship in the stationary ice field was implemented using the overset grid technique instead of the typical approach of applying a constant flow with moving ice particles. The estimated ice resistance as well as ice behaviors around the hull from the simulations were compared with model test results and underwater videos of the same vessel in a similar ice condition. The results demonstrated good correlation in most cases, but it needs to be improved for actual application. Detailed numerical set up including input parameters and comparison between experimental and numerical results are provided. Some future work are also discussed in the paper.</p>
