<p>Estimation of the hydrodynamic loads based on strip theory with the&nbsp;Morrison equation provides a fast and inexpensive way for the offshore&nbsp;industry. The advantage of this approach is that it only requires the&nbsp;undisturbed wave kinematics with some inertial and viscous coefficients.&nbsp;Over the recent years, the development in numerical wave tanksimulations makes it possible to simulate non-linear three-hour sea states,&nbsp;within or below real time computational time. In the current paper, the&nbsp;open-source fully nonlinear potential flow model REEF3D::FNPF is&nbsp;employed for the wave propagation calculations. Here, the Laplace&nbsp;equation for the velocity potential is solved on a sigma-coordinate mesh&nbsp;with the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions to close the system. A&nbsp;technique to calculate the total acceleration on the sigma-coordinate grid&nbsp;is introduced which makes it&nbsp;possible to apply the strip theory in a moving&nbsp;grid framework. The combination of the strip theory and the three-hour&nbsp;wave&nbsp;simulation creates a unique possibility to estimate the&nbsp;hydrodynamic loads in real time for all discrete positions in space within&nbsp;the domain of the numerical wave tank. This paper describes and&nbsp;validates this technique. The numerical results for inline forces on an&nbsp;offshore wind monopile substructure are compared with experimental&nbsp;measurements where the new approach shows relatively good&nbsp;agreement.</p>

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
