- Objectives and Scope:This work discusses methods to quantify environmental indicators of development alternatives during the early design phase of offshore fields and how to include them in the selection process. The goal is to develop a decision-support method to: 1) evaluate field development alternatives of reduced environmental impact and 2) dealing with conflicting indicators such as economic value and environmental performance.- Methods and Procedures:A value chain model of a synthetic field located in the Norwegian Continental Shelf was created using an integrated asset modeling tool. The model computes the net present value of the project and the amount of CO2 emissions based on the hydrocarbon production profile and the field energy consumption. Several cases and development alternatives using power sources such as gas turbines, power from shore, and wind turbines are analyzed. It has been assumed that the gas turbine generates most of the CO2 and that the amounts of CO2 produced is a function of the field power consumption. The effect of the CO2 tax is included and studied. The effect of subsurface and cost uncertainties is quantified.- Results and Observations:Results show that there are development alternatives that provide fair economic value while having a lower environmental footprint. Limit values of CO2 tax were determined for which there is a significant effect on the economic value of the project and will, therefore, affect field development concept selection.- Novel/Additive Information:The work described in this paper could enable field planners to analyze and flag environmentally friendly field designs that still have high economic value.

Supporting the need among researchers worldwide for additional online and multimedia content, ASME now offers the ASME Conference Video Collection. This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
