<p>A data-based model is developed to predict model the dynamical forces on an oscillating circular cylinder in a flow regime where Vortex-Induced-Vibrations (VIV) are known to occur.&nbsp; The model is developed for use in future control systems aimed at manipulating energy extraction. The dynamic model is empirical, given that it was developed on the basis of measurements recorded over a large set of forced motion experiments, spanning a range of parametric values governing and prescribing the kinematics of the cylinder motion.&nbsp; The model includes the dynamics of a circular cylinder undergoing forced combined in-line and cross-flow motion in a free stream. The experiments were conducted in a fully automated towing tank where parameters of in-line amplitude of motion, cross-flow amplitude of motion, reduced velocity, and phase difference between in-line and cross-flow motion were varied over nearly 10,000 experiments. All experiments were carried out at a constant Reynolds number of 7620. The measured forces from the experiments comprise a data log that can be used to provide force input to a time-invariant dynamic model of an elastically mounted circular cylinder that is free to move in both the in-line and cross-flow direction.&nbsp; The equations of motion for the cylinder are solved in time with force updates based on force values derived from the data log. The dynamic model is validated against published experimental data, providing a basis for future feedback control synthesis toward energy harvesting applications.</p>

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
