The action of the wind field plays an important role in the formation, development, propagationand dissipation of waves. In this paper, the effect of wind on the evolution of focused breakingwaves is investigated using a two-phase flow model in REEF3D, an open-source computationalfluid dynamics program. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equation and the k-w turbulencemodel are adopted to resolve the wind-wave field, with the air-water interface captured by the levelset method. In this study, the focused waves in deep water are modelled with a fixed wave steepnessmethod. Wave breaking occurs when the steepness of the wave crest front satisfies the breakingcriteria. The wind field is modelled by introducing the vertical wind velocity boundary condition,expressed as a function of distance above the mean water surface. The velocity profile near thewater surface at longer fetches follows the logarithmic law. The proposed model is validated withexperimental measurements both in the absence of wind and under the influence of wind. Thecomputational results show a fairly good agreement with experimental data for both focused nonbreakingwaves and breaking waves. Further, detailed information of the water surface profile,airflow structure near the water surface, focusing and breaking process, the change in the focusposition, evolution of wave maximum wave height, plunging jet and splash-up phenomena arepresented and discussed for focused breaking waves in the presence of winds. It is found that windforcing moves the focus position upstream and the distance of this change increases as the windvelocity increases. The winds also increase the generation of the vorticity and airflow turbulencestructures and effects the breaking wave shoaling and run-up process.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
