In this paper a finite element model for the simulation of ice-structure interaction problems which are dominated by crushing at low and medium confinement ratios will be presented. The failure mode of ice depends on the strain rate. At very low impact velocities, the ice reacts ductile whereas at high velocities the ice reacts in brittle mode. In case of moving ships, we are focusing on brittle mode.In the literature there is a multitude of approaches for the simulation of ice existing. Nevertheless, the literature approaches do not seem suitable for the simulation of ice-structure interaction at low and medium confinement ratios in brittle mode. Therefore, it was decided to simulate the ice-structure interaction problem within the FE method while preserving mass and energy as much as possible by the node splitting technique. The claim of the presented model is not to reproduce the individual cracks in high accuracy, as this is not possible with a reasonable element size due to the large number of crack fronts during ice-structure interaction process, but to represent the material behavior in a smeared form. The determination of correct maximum ice forces and contact pressures are the focus of the model.&nbsp;In the paper different simulation results of the presented model are shown. These include compression tests, ice extrusion tests and a first outlook on possible applications. The test results of the novel ice extrusion test is especially suited as a basis for the development of numerical models, since it directly represents a real and well documented ice-structure interaction process. In addition, an extensive experimental database in various dimensions is already available.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
