This paper provides a general review of available models used in the NRC-OCRE (National Research Council – Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering) that could be used to support the assessment of a ship’s performance in ice conditions. The models were separated into three main categories: empirical, numerical and real-time, and reviewed in terms of key strengths and weaknesses. The numerical category was broken into three sub-categories, namely: discrete element methods, finite element methods and particle-in-cell methods. The real-time modelling category includes models that fall within the other modelling categories but are capable of simulations at real-time. This was included as a separate category to outline the features and modular structure of this type of model. A general overview of the modelling categories and specific models within each category is given. Within each modelling category, specific models were compared to outline the key features of both the independent models and the modelling category itself. A representative model within each category and sub-category was selected and used to present the output for a given scenario. This enabled a demonstration of output capabilities for each modelling category. It also provides the reader with additional information pertaining to the input requirements and validation for the selected models.A discussion of the integration of an ice loading model into an existing ship simulation framework is included. A specific case was reviewed in which a successful integration had occurred and was documented. This allowed for demonstration of a process that could be followed for updating one’s numerical modelling capabilities.To assist in decision making with respect to the extension of current modelling tools to allow for the assessment of ship performance in ice, a comparative assessment of each modelling category and sub-category was performed in terms of a number of assessment criteria. This comparative ranking was done qualitatively based on the information available in the literature combined with experience relating to working with the models. Based on this review, guidance was provided in terms of selecting a numerical tool to extend current ship performance modelling capabilities to consider ice operations. In general, numerical and real-time simulations have strong potential in a number of applications related to ship performance in ice-covered waters. Some of these applications are summarized. Each modelling category and sub-category has a unique set of advantages and disadvantages. These should be considered in detail to ensure that the numerical model(s) selected are optimal in terms of their ability to assess desired scenarios and interface with existing software.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
