<p>&nbsp;This paper reviews the published literature concerned with the consequences of locked cracks on the strength of ship panels. Cracks are surface or subsurface fissures that develop in materials and have a harmful effect on the load carrying capacity of metals.Various types of cracks exist in metals and can be categorised as cooling, solidification, centreline, crater, grinding, pickling, heat treatment, machining tears, plating, fatigue, creep, stress corrosion and hydrogen cracks. Cracks can grow and lead to complete fracture of the component posing significant threats and may lead to serious injuries or loss of life.&nbsp;Locked cracks are not propagated cracks which have a harmful effect on the ultimate strength of the metals. Locked cracks can be present as longitudinal cracks, transverse cracks, and inclined cracks; each of these types has a different effect on the ultimate strength of the material. Several experimental, and numerical studies have been conducted to show the effect of locked cracks types, length, and location on the load carrying capacity of ship panels subjected to various loading conditions. all studies concluded the negative effect of locked cracks on the ultimate strength of ship panels, and this paper will review the effect of the locked cracks on panels.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>
