Mechanically lining a thin layer of non-corrosive metal material to a carbon steel pipe proves to be significantly more cost-effective than a metallurgically bonded clad pipe. A weakness of the lined pipe is that the liner is extremely sensitive to geometric imperfections and can wrinkle and collapse under severe bending. As a common defect of the pipeline, the local dent of the lined pipe involves the deformation of both the carrier pipe and the liner, which poses a severe threat to the integrity of the composite structure.&nbsp;In this paper, we developed a numerical framework to study the responses of the lined pipe during indentation and, more importantly, the influence of local dents on the bending capacity of lined pipes. The slight separation between the liner and the carrier pipe was observed during the indentation, depending on the geometric feature of the indenter. Under bending, the liner typically collapsed earlier than the carrier pipe, causing a considerable reduction of the collapse curvature and ultimate load-carrying capacity. The evolution of the deformation of the composite structure during the bending process will be presented in this paper. An extensive parametric investigation was also performed to study the sensitivity of some vital variables of the problem.

This platform will collect and provide long-term access to conference presentation videos, encompassing all technology areas within ASME's technical conference and events program. About 30,000-40,000 engineers across all mechanical engineering and related disciplines participate in ASME conferences each year. This includes authors of approximately 6,000 to 8,000 technical papers published by ASME, the majority of whom also submit video presentations for our virtual conferences. The video collection will be available as an add-on to existing product packages or as a separate subscription.
