Suzuki-Miyaura (SM) coupling is a metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond reaction between organoboron and organohalide under basic conditions. Cross-coupling reactions are typically catalyzed by the expensive palladium (Pd) catalyst. This reaction is commonly used in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, polymers, and agrochemicals. Current studies have focused on using different reactants, catalysts, and sets of conditions for this type of coupling reaction, but there has been little research administered on the nickel-phosphine catalysts with various SM reactions. Our objectives include the application of nickel-phosphine complexes in various SM reactions, investigation of the efficiency of different nickel catalysts, and full characterization of the SM products obtained. We synthesized the nickel-phosphine catalysts (phosphine = triphenylphoshine (PPh3); 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (DPPE); 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA)) according to literature.1 The organic product was purified and then characterized by 1H NMR, TLC, GCMS, IR, and UV-Vis.<br/><br/>Scheme 1 exhibited the best results with the Ni(PCy3)2 catalyst compared to other reactions that we have investigated. TLC and weight comparison proved that there were at least 76.6% products recovered. GCMS and 1H NMR confirmed the purity of the product. The catalyst that proved to provide the highest yield by nearly 50% was Ni(PCy3)2. These results provided evidence that of the various nickel-phosphine catalysts observed, Ni(PCy3)2 proved to be the most efficient.
