Electrocatalytic water splitting provides a strategy to produce chemical fuels from renewable energy. The oxidative half reaction of water splitting is a kinetically and thermodynamically challenging process that necessitates the need for robust electrocatalytic materials to increase efficiency. New first row transition metal containing molecular complexes have been developed that can be immobilized onto conductive ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC). The presentation will focus on the study of electrocatalytic activity of the precursor molecular complexes, as homogenous catalysts, and the carbon-supported materials. One family of catalysts that has been developed utilizes cobalt active sites paired with a “capping arene” ligand capable of π-stacking onto OMC and potentially allowing for electrons to be shuttled from the metal center to the electrode surface. The presentation will also discuss various efforts to increase the efficiency and stability of heterogenized molecular complexes containing similar active sites.
