Work in the Kisunzu Lab investigates the properties and reactivity of strained molecules – particularly focusing on benzynes and other arynes. Benzyne intermediates have been shown to undergo a variety of types of reactions including additions, pericyclic reactions, and bond insertions. Our lab is interested in developing methods to access synthetically relevant molecular frameworks by utilizing multiple conditions for aryne generation such as photochemically-generated arynes and the widely used <i>ortho</i>-silyl aryl triflate precursors. On Colorado College’s Block Plan schedule, research projects are generally carried out in advanced courses, during research blocks, and over the summer. Since 2018, students have worked on benzyne projects in all three of these venues. Successful strategies for engaging students and building a research program through this process, as well as observed lessons and challenges, will be discussed.
