Polymer chemists are always curious of new polymerization methods that can use inexpensive monomers, facile procedures to achieve better control of polymer structures. This presentation discusses our recent interest on utilizing several monomers with self-accelerating reaction features for synthesis of 1) hyperbranched polymers via chain-growth Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition polymerization, and 2) linear polymers and multisegmented block copolymers with high molecular weights and segmented structures via Friedel-Crafts hydroxyalkylation reaction. These polymers are successfully applied as unimolecular nanocontainers for encapsulation and as membrane materials for transportation.
