Surfaces are critical for heterogenous catalysts. We present results from studies examining the role of titania surfaces in nanoparticulate titania serving as a support for noble metal nanoparticles in both the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol and the oxidation of benzyl alcohol. We show that titania surfaces play a role in mediated interactions with water in Ru/TiO<sub>2</sub>-catalyzed hydrodeoxygenation chemistry and impact particle size, which in turn impacts reaction rates, in the Au/TiO<sub>2</sub>-catalyzed oxidation of benzyl alcohol.
