Light is absorbed by phycobilisome antennas in photosynthetic cyanobacteria, and then transferred to Photosystem I (PSI) and Photosystem II (PSII). These pigment-protein complexes direct energy to their respective reaction centers. In PSI, competing energy transfer pathways steer excitations toward the central P700 reaction center or toward peripheral red chlorophylls. We observe power-dependent dynamics in transient absorption spectra from <i>Synechocystis sp.</i> PCC 6803 that are consistent with singlet-singlet annihilation in the red chlorophyll pools.
