<br/>Organic solvents acetonitrile and methanol are the most used mobile phases in reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) method development since the 1970’s. The organic solvent acetone is a less toxic and expensive solvent compared to more commonly used acetonitrile with similar physiochemical properties. In this work the solvation parameter model was used to evaluate retention properties of mobile phases containing from 20-70 % (v/v) acetone-water on six columns with different stationary phase chemistry; superficially porous octadecylsiloxane-bonded silica (Kinetex C18), electrostatic-shielded octadecylsiloxane-bonded silica (Luna Omega PS C18, diisobutyloctadecyl-bonded silica (Kinetex XB-C18), phenylhexyl-bonded silica (Kinetex Phenyl-Hexyl), octadecylsiloxane-bonded silica (Luna C18(2)), and octylsiloxane-bonded silica (Kinetex C8). A comparison of system constants of the solvation parameter model for acetonitrile, tetrahydrofuran, propan-2-ol and methanol compositions for the same separation conditions confirms that the general solvation properties of acetone mobiles phases are more similar to that of acetonitrile. Therefore, acetone solvent could potentially be used as a replacement solvent in RPLC applications with non UV-visible detectors.
