The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that 1 in every 10 pharmaceutical products sold are substandard or falsified. To address this problem, the Distributed Pharmaceutical Analysis Laboratory (DPAL), a collaboration between Notre Dame and multiple undergraduate institutions across the United States, analyzes samples of medications obtained from developing nations. The Lieberman Lab at Notre Dame obtains and distributes these pharmaceuticals, and the undergraduate institutions analyze them using excess instrument capacity. At Roanoke College, HPLCs and sample preparation techniques were subjected to a system suitability test for the analysis of amoxicillin and acetaminophen. The process of completing system suitability included a linearity test of multiple different concentrations, a precision test of six injections of the same standard, an accuracy and range test comparing different standards at various concentrations, a spike recover/specificity test which analyzed the ability to quantify a spiked sample, and limit of detection and lower limit of detection tests. Samples of acetaminophen and amoxicillin from Kenya were analyzed and the results will be presented.
